Adventures In Filming The Home Office For Success Series During The 2020 – 2021 Pandemic

What happens when an interior designer and an architect design a home office?

Two years ago, as the world was embracing remote work, Najeeb Khan and I were thinking about a show to renovate home offices.

While we were busy with other work and editing, we finally launched our Home Office For Success Series in January 2022. We affectionally called it HOSS. It’s like an extreme home makeover, but for home offices.

The Process

We made a call for submissions via Linked In and many interested people wanted to take advantage of this offer.

Each of our five hand-picked participants had a different home office setup. Whether it was a small or large space such as a basement, bedroom, living/dining space or a dedicated room in the house. Some were located in Toronto, while others hailed from Austin, Texas, Portugal and Waterloo, Ontario. Najeeb and I combined our shared industry experience to help renovate their workspace.

To date, we launched five separate video series and five separate recaps of our planning sessions on Linked In and other social media channels.

Roles (Who Did What)

Najeeb managed the tech side while I advised on the planning and design of their space. I enjoyed the collaboration and the opportunity to learn new skills. Najeeb’s business, Teamland, offers virtual, hybrid and in-person team-building activities from retreats to holiday parties and has flourished during the pandemic. (It's worth checking out – check it out here.)

Fun in a Productive and Educational Way

I had lots of fun with Najeeb throughout this production. It was one of the projects that helped maintain sanity and my productivity during the pandemic. Our work was accomplished remotely except for that one brief moment where we met in person in August of 2021 to produce an introduction to the series.

In each episode, we discussed items such as the organization of a workspace, horizontal and vertical spaces using cubbies and a proper set-up for Zoom lighting. We reviewed best practices such as the clean-desk ritual to separate your work mess from the rest of your home. Our focus was to reclaim their time through good design.

Check out the videos and video recaps. Make sure you bring your popcorn for viewing and a notepad for lessons learned. I’m sure that you’ll take away a few tips and tricks that you can use for your home office renovation.
